Zanele Muholi, Bayephi III, Johannesburg, 2017
Edition 6/10, Created with the artist as a fundraiser for Autograph's work
Product Description
In 2017, Autograph commissioned Zanele Muholi to create new works as part of their socially engaged self-portrait series Somnyama Ngonyama (isiZulu for Hail the Dark Lioness). In these striking photographs, Muholi uses their own body as a canvas to confront the politics of race and representation in the visual archive.
The commission highlights the 1956 Women’s March on Pretoria: a pivotal moment in South Africa’s history, which saw thousands of women from different cultural backgrounds united to defiantly demonstrate against repressive legislation, which severely restricted their movements and human rights.
Bayephi III was taken at the Old Fort Prison complex in Johannesburg, where many of the protesting women and numerous political prisoners were incarcerated for transgressing pass laws during Apartheid. This limited edition has been created with Muholi as a fundraiser for Autograph's arts and learning programmes, and is therefore available at a special price.
