James Barnor, Coffee Night at Theobald’s Road, 1960/2021

Born in 1929 in Accra, James Barnor is considered a pioneer of Ghanaian photography. This limited edition features a hardcover photography book containing a print of Barnor's work Coffee Night at Theobald’s Road. With a curtain as makeshift studio backdrop, he spontaneously took this photograph in 1960 at one of the many multicultural social gatherings that took place at his home in east London, shortly after arriving in Britain from Ghana.

Coffee Night at Theobald’s Road embodies the artist's relaxed interpersonal, cross-cultural style and the joie de vivre often seen in his photographs.

The James Barnor: Ever Young monograph features 200 images by the artist from the 1940s - 1970s, texts by Kobena Mercer and Renée Mussai, plus an interview with Barnor by Margaret Busby OBE and Francis Hodgson.
