James Barnor, Olas Comedians, Ever Young studio, Accra, c.1953-1954

Born in 1929 in Accra, James Barnor is today considered a pioneer of Ghanaian contemporary photography, with a career that spans six decades and covers a remarkable period in history. His portraits bridge continents and photographic genres to create transatlantic narratives marked by his passionate interest in people and cultures.

The artist took this theatrical group portrait in the mid-1950s at his Ever Young studio in Accra, Ghana. Ever Young was both a community hub and portrait studio, visited by a diverse clientele including civil servants and dignitaries, politicians, pastors, and teachers, performance artists and newlyweds.
