Carrie Mae Weems, A Single's Waltz in Time, 2003/2025
Carrie Mae Weems has collaborated with Autograph on a new fundraiser limited edition print to support our work
17 x 42 inches, Edition of 20
Product Description
Carrie Mae Weems is one of the most celebrated artists known for her explorations of identity and power, grounded by her experience as a Black woman in America. In collaboration with Autograph, she has produced this new limited edition as a fundraiser supporting our work.
This powerful work blends fact, performance and symbolic reclamation – prompting a reconsideration of whose histories are visible and who holds the agency to narrate them.
Across three photographs, Weems stages herself dancing through the ‘White Ballroom’ of the Nottoway Plantation in Louisiana. Built by enslaved labourers in 1859, Nottoway was the largest surviving plantation house in the Southern United States. In later years, it operated as a controversial resort and tourist destination before being destroyed by fire in 2025.
A Single's Waltz in Time is an iconic triptych, created in 2003 as part of the artist’s acclaimed series The Louisiana Project, prompting a reconsideration of whose histories are visible and who holds the agency to narrate them.
This 42 x 17 inch triptych is signed by the artist and available exclusively through Autograph in a limited edition of 20 prints. It offers a rare opportunity to collect a significant work by Weems, while supporting Autograph's mission to shape a more inclusive future in the arts and beyond.
Autograph is a registered charity. Profits from this fundraiser edition can help us to preserve diverse photographic history, reach those who are underrepresented, and support the next generation of artists.
About the Artist

Carrie Mae Weems, a conceptual artist, unpacks and confronts constructions of race and femininity in the pursuit of new models to live by. Grounded in the specificity of her lived experience as a Black woman but universal in its explorations of family relationships, cultural identity, power structures and social hierarchy, her artistic practice is primarily photographic but also incorporates text, fabric, audio, installation, and video.
Informed by narrative storytelling, folkloric traditions and the observational methodologies of the social sciences, her approach to image-making ranges from staged and serialized narrative to appropriation and adaptation of archival and ethnographic imagery. Weems takes aim at the complicity of the photographic medium in propagating dehumanizing tropes and the historical omission of Black women from fine art institutions and canons.
