Product Description
In this luminous, dreamlike work, Nhu Xuan Hua reflects on the fragility of how stories are communicated – or withheld – across generations. Emerging from inadequacy of language to fully articulate complex family histories, New Chapter, Archive from the year ’85 considers how memory can splinter, blur and slip from view.
Born and raised in Paris to immigrant parents who fled to Europe after the war in Vietnam (1955-1975), Hua grew up feeling a palpable distance from her Vietnamese heritage. Drawing on her personal archive, she reimagines and digitally alters a rare family photograph taken in Belgium in 1985 – the only known image of her grandparents together, captured on the day her parents became engaged to be married,
Part of the artist’s acclaimed series Tropism: Consequences of a Displaced Memory, this work reflects on how the past continues to reverberate into the present, shaped by absence, silence and acts of remembering.
Mounted on Plexiglass and framed to stand or hang, this edition is intimate in scale, recalling a family photograph: a quiet, poignant meditation on memory’s instability.
