Published by Autograph in the mid 1990s, we are releasing copies of this rare monograph after they were discovered in a recent stock take. Produced in the spirit of compassion, Gastambide photographed the black Amerasians of Vietnam: mixed race children (Con Lai) resulting from the American War in Vietnam (1965-75). Himself the son of an unknown Vietnamese woman and black American solider, Gastambide was adopted by a French family at the age of one and was raised in Reims.
He returned to Vietnam in for the first time in 1991 and witnessed the disdain with which many of these children were treated, and how both America and Vietnam treated them as pariahs. Through the photographs in this book, Gastambide hopes to create a voice for these Amerasians.
