This portrait by the legendary Ghanaian photographer James Barnor captures the vibrancy and confidence of 1950s Accra, in the years leading up to independence in 1957. The artist took this photograph at a beach party for Drum - the influential anti-apartheid magazine based in Johannesburg and Africa's first Black lifestyle publication.

Whether as private spectator or on professional assignment, Barnor passionately documented daily life in Accra, photographing moments from religious ceremonies and social events to political rallies – witnessing history as it unfolded at a pivotal moment in time.

This limited edition has been hand-printed in the darkroom by master printer Bayeux, London.
