Nhu Xuan Hua

Nine new works considering displacement and connection across generations

Promise of Spring, 2026

ABOUT THE commission

As part of Nhu Xuan Hua’s first solo exhibition in the UK, Of Walking on Fire, Autograph commissioned the artist to produce nine new works, two of which are now cared for as part of Autograph's collection. Hua grew up in a household using fractured forms of various languages, including Vietnamese, French and French Sign Language. As such, communication often existed in the gaps between them.

The commissioned works include New Chapter – Archive from the year ’85, featuring a photograph from Hua’s family archive, taken in Belgium in 1985. It is the only known image of Hua’s grandparents posing together and reflects her ongoing exploration of diasporic memory, communication across generations and the shifting nature of personal history. Hua explains: "An image can hold ambiguity without forcing resolution. It allows different cultural codes, memories, and interpretations to inhabit the same frame – almost like a small theatre for life. It becomes a form of communication that does not require perfect fluency to be felt."

Other works draw on the symbolism of Đạo Mẫu, a Vietnamese spiritual tradition of Mother Goddess workshop, to honour female deities. For instance in Little Super in Versailles, Archive from the year ’88, Hua imagines the figure of a young girl as a powerful symbol of resilience, carrying the weight of recurring family rituals and the endurance required to sustain connection across generations. Collectively, these works see Hua look towards the younger generations, and particular to the women in her family, to consider new possibilities for self-expression and communication, asking: what forms of connection might still be unlocked and carried forward?
