Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Bronze Head, 1987
Product Description
Rotimi Fani-Kayode (1955 - 1989) used photography to explore themes of race, sexuality, spirituality and the self. Born into a prominent Yoruba family, he moved to England following the outbreak of civil war in Nigeria, becoming a prominent in the Black British art scene in the 1980s and an important figure in the history of art.
From 1983 until his death, the artist lived and worked in Brixton, where his studio transcended into a sanctuary visualising black queer self-expression. Fani-Kayode’s transgressive and radical vision broke through boundaries of art history and Yoruba spirituality, exemplified in this 1987 self-portrait with a head in the style of an Ife bronze.
For this posthumous edition, a master printer hand-produced silver gelatin prints directly from artist's original negative held in Autograph's archives in London. The final three prints are still available, with previous edition numbers acquired by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and other prominent collections.
