How can art present experiences of illness and serve as an alternative embodied archive to medical records?
Join artist Antonia Attwood for an in-conversation event with curator Mariana Lemos. Programmed to coincide with Attwood’s exhibition Close to the Surface: Living with Chronic Illness, the two will discuss Attwood’s new works, which seek to share the experience of living with chronic illness.
They will explore art’s capacity to present experiences of illness and serve as an alternative embodied archive to medical records.
Mariana is an independent curator based in London working with performance art, affect and crip phenomenologies. Her curatorial approach is based on disability access and feminist methodologies.
She holds an MFA in Curating from Goldsmiths University (2020) and is an Associate Curator at Wysing Art Centre and DASH, as well as an Associate Lecturer at the MA Curating and Collections at Chelsea UAL. She is part of the Feminist Duration Reading Group, currently in residency at Goldsmiths CCA, and a Board Member of Saloon London. She also works with the Flat Time House in coordinating the London Residency Network.
She has published texts in Frieze, Art Review, Flash Art and others. Recent projects include Flare-Up at Goldsmiths CCA May-Aug 2026; Antonia Luxem: On Falling at Annex by the Koppel Project, London 2026; and Duets at Teaspoon Projects 2025. Upcoming: Blood and Coffee at Vienna Arts Academy, Nov 2026 - Feb 2027.
Antonia Attwood is a London-based artist working around issues of health. Her body of work has developed a focus on illustrating and visually interpreting the phenomenology of illness, and how living with mental or physical illness feels.
She is the Artistic Director at Creative Health Camden, an arts and health charity based in Kentish Town Health Centre, as well as an associate lecturer at the London College of Communication. Recent exhibitions include Rotten, Rotten, Rotten at Peckham Levels, 2024, Nurture at All Is Joy Studios, 2024 and Common Ground at Art Lacuna, 2022.
