ABOUT THE Event

We warmly invite you to Claire de Rouen Books to join us in celebrating the launch of As I Weave by Aasha John.

Aasha John is a London-based artist and teacher whose work explores craft as a form of resistance: a means of reclaiming and reimagining relationships with the past across generations and geographies.

As I Weave documents a significant new body of work developed during her Visible Practice Residency at Autograph. Bringing together woven photographs, family archives and oral histories, the publication explores how memories and connections can be preserved and remade despite experiences of dislocation. John also reflects on her practice as an artist and educator, and how these roles can inform one another.

The launch event at Claire de Rouen Books will begin with a conversation between Aasha John and artist Becky Warnock addressing teaching and creative practice. Following the discussion, John will lead a hands-on weaving workshop offering an insight into her artistic methodology and the ways she has adapted and shared her practice with students during the residency. The event will include a drinks reception.

The ticket price for this event is £5 and includes a free copy of the publication that can be collected upon arrival. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. If this ticket price is unaffordable for you, please get in touch with Ishy at Ishy@autograph-abp.co.uk about free ticketing options.

Please note that Autograph is not able to mail the publication to no-show guests.

Speakers

Aasha John

Aasha John (born 1989, Trinidad) is a London-based visual artist whose practice is rooted in storytelling and community.

xploring her relationship with places, often through collaborative or participatory practices, John invites the viewer to physically engage with her artwork and share her experiences, in turn contributing to the artwork themselves, often through printmaking or bookmarking.

She is interested in the artist's role as investigator and interpreter; probing their subject and conveying meaning in a way that engages the viewer and invites them to consider their relationship with the subject matter.

John studied Graphic Communication at University for the Creative Arts. She is Head of Art/Technology Faculty and Head of Art at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in Islington.

Becky Warnock

Becky Warnock is an artist and educator based in London. Her work is collaborative and research-based, often including participatory workshops that work across photography, film and performance.

Her practice is developed through relationship-building and meaningful engagement, informing both the process and output. Rooted in her background in support work, Warnock engages with the ethics of care and collective experience, particularly within mental health and trauma discourses. She has a deep interest in listening; creating projects that platform people and stories that go unheard, and developing spaces to prioritise conversation and dialogue.

She is currently Senior Lecturer in photography at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London.
