Autograph is developing the first major solo exhibition in the United Kingdom by Canadian visual artist Sandra Brewster. Gotta Find Me An Angel will bring together key works from across Brewster’s practice, foregrounding her distinctive approach to image-making that combines photography and drawing through a gel transfer process developed over two decades. The resulting works are materially unstable and visually shifting, reflecting the fluid and unsettled nature of diasporic identity.
The exhibition will include portraits of influential cultural figures such as Nina Simone, Toni Morrison and Claudia Jones, whose lives and legacies resonate with themes of resistance, creativity and cultural memory. These works will be presented alongside moving image pieces that extend Brewster’s exploration of time-based forms.
The exhibition is shaped by Autograph’s longstanding engagement with questions of race, representation and social justice.

Sandra Brewster is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. Of Guyanese heritage, Brewster’s practice reflects a multilayered sense of identity shaped by the intersection of place and time.
Her work spans a range of media and often evokes movement metaphorically through imagery and gesture, foregrounding and monumentalizing the Black diasporic experience. She earned her BFA from York University and holds a Master of Visual Studies from the University of Toronto. Her work is included in numerous private and public collections. Brewster is the recipient of the Gattuso Prize (CONTACT 2017), the Toronto Friends of Visual Arts Artist Prize (2018), and the prestigious Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award (2024).
