About our family
My family consists of myself (mum) , dad, and our three children. Our eldest was born unexpectedly early and had a turbulent start to life. She was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy along with some additional conditions. Our second daughter is 13, and our youngest is 7.
When we first started going to Autograph, there was very little available for families like ours, with disabilities. At times we felt quite excluded from our community, so finding these workshops meant a lot to us.
A safe space to express ourselves through art
Art has always been a shared passion in our home and attending the workshops has led to some beautiful creations. Each workshop gives us the chance to bond as a family while also providing a safe space for each of us to express ourselves through art. The staff are always incredibly supportive and ready to help whenever needed. We end each session by sharing our work, which is a lovely way for every child’s voice and creativity to be seen and celebrated.
Our family has found a creative community
Before attending the workshops our family often felt isolated, with very few activities that truly welcomed children with additional needs. It was difficult to find spaces where all of my children felt included and able to express themselves freely. Since joining the workshops at Autograph, we have found a supportive and creative community. My children have grown in confidence, enjoy expressing themselves through art and feel proud sharing their creations. As a family, we’ve built stronger bonds and now have a space where everyone feels seen, supported and valued.
I've felt more supported and connected
It was often difficult to find inclusive activities where my whole family felt welcome, and as a parent of a child with additional needs this could feel isolating. At Autograph, I’ve felt far more supported and connected. The workshops provide a relaxed, welcoming space where my children can express themselves and I can enjoy creating alongside them. It has given me the reassurance that there are spaces where families like ours are valued, understood and included.
Access to creativity builds confidence in ways that don't rely on words
More galleries and museums should provide workshops and activities for SEND families. Inclusive creative spaces ensure that all children and families feel welcome, represented and able to take part in cultural experiences. Creativity can have a powerful impact on SEND families – art offers a way for children to communicate, express emotions and build confidence in ways that don’t rely on words. Many SEND families find it difficult to attend activities that are fit for the whole family, so accessible workshops help remove those barriers and create a sense of belonging.

Autograph is a space to see things differently. Since 1988, we have championed photography that explores issues of race, identity, representation, human rights and social justice, sharing how photographs reflect lived experiences and shape our understanding of ourselves and others.
