About the Event

Join us for a late gallery opening, featuring a new pop-up exhibition of photography and video work created by young people living in and leaving care.

Working together with artist D. Wiafe, the young people produced a series of portraits exploring how light changes the way we see people and places. Over three days they created a photographic series of street portraits and polaroid pictures. Using natural light they posed and framed themselves against colourful urban backdrops in Shoreditch, an area they had not visited before. A video work used studio lighting to create moving portraits, documenting the young people’s response to a favourite music track.

During the project the young people gained many new skills and experiences in photography and video making. This included learning how to operate professional cameras, set up studio lights, use editing software to finish their work, as well as how to stage a photographic shoot.

This project was produced in partnership with the Three Boroughs Virtual Schools Enrichment Programme, a service providing for Looked After Children and Care Leavers in Kensington & Chelsea,Westminster and Hammersmith & Fulham.

D.Wiafe is an artist who works in collaboration with marginalised and at-risk youth groups. Drawn to the collision of truth and ction in the photographic image, his work centres around readings that unfold when the public is called to witness the spectacle of BritishYouth.

Special thanks to Si Wharton (RBKC, LBHF & WCC Virtual Schools Service), Hayley Moore and Mandy Millward (Westminster’s Leaving Care Service) and all the people who encouraged and supported the young people to take part.
