Join us to celebrate the launch of two powerful new exhibitions at Autograph's gallery in Hackney: the international debut of Poulomi Basu's series Fireflies, and the London premiere of Sutapa Biswas' acclaimed film Lumen. Through these exhibitions the artists illuminate journeys – across time, generations, continents – and the ripple effects of complex and turbulent pasts, visualising how matrilineal history has been shaped through the bloodlines of collective experience.
We are aware that there is a tube strike planned for Thursday and it may be more difficult for you to reach us. If you are able to make it to the gallery, we'd love to welcome you.
In Fireflies, Indian artist and activist Poulomi Basu foregrounds the relationship between mother and daughter. Using photography, video and sound, Basu reflects on experiences of trauma – particularly patriarchal violence – navigating the claustrophobia of home, dreams of freedom, defiance, and transcendence. Curated by Bindi Vora.
Sutapa Biswas’ practice is underpinned by an interest in colonial histories and how this relates to gender, race and class. Where history has often marginalised the female voice, her new film Lumen reinstates it, not just as a mainstay of family and home but as an avatar of social conscience. Curated by Mark Sealy.
