Photographers in conversation

Sunil Gupta x Jermaine Frances

POSTED: 09 February 2021

Sunil Gupta talks to Jermaine Francis about documentary practices, the problematics of defining black photography and the formation of Autograph.

Sunil Gupta has been using photography as a critical practice since the 1970s, focusing on race, migration, and queer issues. One of the founding members of Autograph, he has been inspirational to generations of photographic activists and LGBTQ+ rights campaigners.

As part of his major retrospective From Here to Eternity at The Photographers' Gallery, Gupta sat down with Jermaine Francis to unpack his photographic processes, politically and socially aware art, and life and love as a Gay Indian man.

Please note, this exhibition and film contains nudity and language of a sexual nature.
