Sun Prints: Family Art Activities

POSTED: 20 July 2021

New family art activities, to welcome in the summer ☀️

Sun Prints

We're welcoming in the summer with a new family art activity, created by artist Katriona Beales. This time, we're making sun prints!

Sun prints are an early photographic printing process, which uses special paper coated with photo-sensitive chemicals to record a picture by capturing light on its surface. Download the activity sheet and watch our make-along video below, to learn how to make your very own sun prints. All you need to complete this activity is a sun print kit, which you can buy here.

This activity sheet was made for Autograph’s Family SEND Art Kits, sent out to families with children with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). Check out the 'discover more' section on this page, where we’ve made our past activity sheets available as free downloads for everyone to enjoy.

Share your creations with us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook 🌻 🌞 🌈  🕶

Providing you with lots of ideas and a list of what you will need in order to make your own sun prints.

Anna Atkins (1799-1871)

We take photos all the time on our phones without really thinking about it, but photography was initially a mind-blowing science and women were instrumental in its development. This activity takes its inspiration from two amazing women: Anna Atkins and Joy Gregory. Anna Atkins (1799-1871) pioneered the use of cyanotypes and produced the first ever photographically illustrated book in Britain, on seaweed and algae.

Joy Gregory

Joy Gregory’s new commission for Autograph Madam Photo (2020) documents her daily walks through lockdown via beautifully observed cyanotypes, drawings, text and photos. View the full commission here.
