POSTED: 11 November 2024

Shining Lights: Black Women Photographers in 1980s–90s Britain has been announced Photography Catalogue of the Year for the Paris Photo-Aperture PhotoBook Awards 2024

The Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards is an annual celebration of the photobook’s enduring role within the narrative of photography. The awards recognise excellence in three major categories of photobook publishing: First PhotoBook, PhotoBook of the Year, and Photography Catalogue of the Year.

Autograph is delighted to announce that Shining Lights: Black Women Photographers in 1980s–90s Britain has been selected as the winner for Photography Catalogue of the Year 2024.

Shining Lights is the first critical anthology to bring together the groundbreaking work of Black women photographers active in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s, providing a richly illustrated overview of a significant and overlooked chapter of photographic history. Seen through the lens of Britain’s sociopolitical and cultural contexts, the publication draws on both lived experience and historical investigation to explore the communities, experiments, collaborations, and complexities that defined the decades.
