We are looking for an emerging creative to produce an in-person event at Autograph’s gallery in Hackney, London in August 2026. The event will take place as part of the public programme for our exhibition
Nhu Xuan Hua: Of Walking on Fire.
Hua reflects on the fragility of memory and the ways stories are communicated – or withheld – across generations. Through reworked family photographs, she visualises how diasporic memory can splinter, blur, and slip from view. Filling the silences she’s faced when asking her parents about her family history, she considers how sound and memory persist in archival spaces where personal histories have dissipated through migration and cultural rupture. We are seeking engaging event proposals that respond to ideas in the exhibition interrogating how history and legacy are preserved, transformed and carried forward in archives.
We’re looking for a new proposal that introduces a fresh process or perspective in line with the expansive capacity of sound in communicating and sharing histories. For more information about Autograph's events programme, visit our events page.
We welcome workshop proposals that:
★ Explore sound through different creative processes or disciplines (e.g., oral histories, poetry, or performance).
★ Engage with ideas or themes from the exhibition, the featured artist, or your own practice.
★ Are collaborative, hands-on and suitable for a group setting.
★ Are distinct from the other events in the public programme (please review them to avoid duplication).
Your event must be suitable for a general audience, run no longer than 3 hours and work within Autograph’s event spaces. We welcome mixed-format events that foster collaboration and active participation.
If you have any questions about the opportunity, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Harriet by emailing learning@autograph-abp.co.uk.
Autograph’s Open Call for Events offers emerging creatives a paid opportunity to stage an event at our gallery. Having launched in 2018 the programme provides a space and resources to develop an idea into a live event.
We welcome proposals that enter a spirit of exchange and learning together. We’re interested to hear your ideas that bring new perspectives and voices to our programme. In return, Autograph’s experienced staff will work with you on:
Can I apply to put on an exhibition of works at Autograph?
No, this is a not an exhibition opportunity.
Who is this opportunity for?
This opportunity is intended to support emerging creatives. Applicants can be of any age. We understand ‘emerging’ to cover people with less than 3 years of experience working in creative industries or events programming, which includes those who have not developed an event of any kind before. The selection process will
prioritise emerging creatives.
Do I have to pay to apply for this opportunity?
No, this opportunity is free to enter.
Do I need to be based in London to apply?
Yes. Due to budget and capacity, we are hosting a 3 hour maximum, in-person event taking place at Autograph’s building in Hackney, London. We will cover travel costs associated with travel within London.
What should the budget cover?
Autograph will commit a budget of up to £620 to cover AV, materials, and contributor fees.
Your proposed workshop therefore needs to be of a suitable scale to fit this budget. Autograph’s programming team will provide successful applicants with support around developing their event in line with the budget. As a guideline, Autograph offers contributors a
fee of £160 for short events (up to 3.5 hours). In addition to the budget, Autograph are also offering successful applicants a £410 curatorial fee. Autograph will provide funds outside of
the curatorial fee and event costs to support any access needs.
If I'm successful, when can I expect my event to take place?
The deadline for applications is 10am (BSR) 25 May 2026. If your proposal is shortlisted we will be in touch to arrange for a call to discuss your proposal, taking place week beginning 8th June 2026. The event itself will be scheduled to take place between: 10 - 24 August 2026.
Will you provide feedback if I'm not selected?
We are a small team and we are not able to offer individual feedback for applicants who are not shortlisted for interview. However, we will share general observations we noticed across applications. Often the reason we’re not able to develop your idea is due to our limited capacity and budget rather than the quality of your proposal so please don’t be disheartened and feel free to apply again in future calls for events.
What does the event pace look like?
The event will take the Education Studio or the Courtyard. Our gallery is a step free venue that welcomes people with all types of disabilities. Download our accessibility guide here. See the pictures our event spaces in the FAQ section of the information pack.
