With our exhibition Ernest Cole: A Lens in Exile drawing to a close, we’re pleased to shed new light on one of the works featured in the exhibition, as uncovered by members of our community. During a trip from New York, Marilyn Nance and Alfred Santana visited the exhibition and - with the support of their networks - were able to identify the three individuals depicted in the image above as Shawn Walker (left), Sandra Brannon (centre) and Ray Francis (right). While Sandra was a designer, Shawn and Ray were members of the renowned Kamoinge Workshop, a collective of Black photographers established in New York City in 1963 and the recent subject of an exhibition at the Whitney Museum of Modern Art in 2021.
This new knowledge joins the many missing stories that Autograph has collected and shared since we were founded in 1988. Such activity is core to our mission; in the words of Stuart Hall, Autograph is a living archive, ‘an ongoing, never-completed project’, and it continues to be a joy and privilege to add to these histories.¹
13 Jun – 12 Oct 2024
The first exhibition of Ernest Cole's photographs documenting New York City during the height of the civil rights movement in America.
Autograph is a place to see things differently. Since 1988, we have championed photography that explores issues of race, identity, representation, human rights and social justice, sharing how photographs reflect lived experiences and shape our understanding of ourselves and others.
