We were honoured to share our Exhibition in a Box display with over 300 local Caribbean elders at Hackney Town Hall on 3 October.
Hackney's Caribbean Tea Party celebrated the achievements of the Windrush generation, and thanked them for their contributions to the borough.
Guests were welcomed by a steel pan rendition of ‘London is the Place for Me’, and the Party included exhibits, Caribbean food, magazine launch and a live BBC Radio London Broadcast. The afternoon was compered by Hackney-born actor and presenter Eddie Nestor MBE.
Autograph contributed our pop-up archive display of 30 remarkable image panels, reproduced from rare 19th century photographs portraying people of African, Caribbean and South Asian descent during the Victorian era in Britain.
Ali Eisa, Autograph's Public Programme Manager (Education) was on hand to chat about the images. He also worked with artist Aida Silvestri to document the day at her polaroid photo booth, where over 50 portraits were taken of guests.
Autograph is a place to see things differently. Since 1988, we have championed photography that explores issues of race, identity, representation, human rights and social justice, sharing how photographs reflect lived experiences and shape our understanding of ourselves and others.
