The story of a stowaway on board the HMT Empire Windrush ship
This photograph was taken on 22 June 1948 at the Port of Tilbury in Essex, England. It's of Evelyn Wauchope, a Jamaican woman who stowed away aboard the Empire Windrush, and found herself elevated to a first class passenger after she was discovered, as other passengers on board the ship made a collection to cover her fare.
This image is one of 37 works acquired by Autograph from the TopFoto archives, sharing the journey of the Windrush generation before, during and after arriving in the UK. These important photos, alongside their stories, are now part of Autograph's permanent collection of photography that aims to preserve the legacy of important narratives that have contributed to British history.
