African Cosmologies Book Shortlisted for Award

African Cosmologies: Photography, Time and the Other has been shortlisted for the 2020 Paris Photo—Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards

Although the photography community won't be able to gather to celebrate The Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards this year due to Covid-19, the prize will continue. Founded in 2012, the Award celebrates the photobook’s contribution to the evolving narrative of photography.

Autograph’s Director, Mark Sealy, recently curated the acclaimed exhibition African Cosmologies: Photography, Time and the Other, part of the FotoFest Biennial 2020. A new hard-cover exhibition catalogue was published alongside the show, bringing together the work of 33 artists of African origin from around the globe whose works challenge traditional notions of Blackness and transnational histories. The book is an important exposition of historical and contemporary Africa and the African diaspora.

We're delighted to announce that the African Cosmologies book has been shortlisted for The Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards 2020, in the Photography Catalogue of the Year category.

Autograph is honoured to have the book included, and we look forward to when the winners are announced on Friday 13 November.

Through 260 pages and 218 images, African Cosmologies questions how subjectivity is constructed and deconstructed by the camera – revealing legacies of resistance by those who defy traditional ideas of sexual, racial, gender-based, and other marginalised identities.
